The Melbourne Storm are optimistic about their new signing, Manaia Waitere, making an impact at the NRL level in 2026 after his off-season transfer from the Canberra Raiders.
The 24-year-old was released by Canberra in December to accommodate the arrival of Coby Black, prompting Melbourne to swiftly secure the versatile outside back.
Although Waitere is unlikely to make Craig Bellamy's Round 1 lineup, the Storm consider him genuine depth that can step in throughout the season.
Waitere made his NRL debut in Round 27 last year, marking his only first-grade appearance. However, he comes with an impressive NSW Cup background, having scored 19 tries in 54 games, including nine last season.
His experience in various positions-fullback, centre, and five-eighth-enhances his value within the Melbourne roster.
The Storm faced numerous injuries in their primary backline during 2025, which could provide opportunities for fringe players. Waitere will be competing with Marion Seve and Moses Leo for a spot.
With Nick Meaney and Tyran Wishart expected to join the Perth Bears in 2027, 2026 is poised to be a vital audition year for the Storm's backs.
