South Sydney Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly is determined to challenge the NSW government's recent rejection of the club's attempt to move to the $828 million Allianz Stadium.
The Rabbitohs have been advocating to share this venue with their rivals, the Sydney Roosters, who have strongly opposed the move.
On Tuesday, NSW Sports Minister Stephen Kamper informed the Rabbitohs that a full-time relocation to Allianz Stadium was deemed financially unviable, citing the club's contract with Accor Stadium, which runs until 2030, as a significant barrier.
This agreement was established in 2006 when Souths were facing financial difficulties.
However, the Rabbitohs have criticized Accor Stadium for its lack of atmosphere and its distance-about 30 kilometers-from their main supporter bases in Redfern and Maroubra.
They proposed playing nine home games at Allianz Stadium, along with two at Accor and one match outside of Sydney.
Kamper's spokesperson emphasized, "The Rabbitohs are contracted to play nine matches per season at Accor Stadium until 2030...
We look forward to continuing to work with the Rabbitohs to create the best game day experience for their fans." The spokesperson also mentioned that moving the Rabbitohs would potentially incur a net loss of $4.5 million to $14 million annually for taxpayers due to existing naming rights and commercial agreements.
"This is taxpayer money we simply can't afford to spend on moving stadiums for the Rabbitohs," the spokesman added, stressing the necessity of funding essential services like schools and hospitals.
Despite this setback, Solly remains resolute and is seeking further clarification from the government.
He asserts that the fight is far from over and points out that the promise of various upgrades to Accor Stadium as part of their long-term contract has not been fulfilled.
The Rabbitohs are undeterred in their pursuit for a more suitable home venue that aligns better with their community and fan engagement aspirations.
