The South Sydney Rabbitohs have finally broken their silence on Nathan Merritt's condition, expressing their happiness at hearing that he is improving.
The club explained that they had refrained from commenting earlier out of respect for Merritt and his family.
Merritt, a former NRL player, was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital after being found unresponsive at his auntie's house.
It is believed that he had an adverse reaction to prescribed pain medication and collapsed.
The 40-year-old has spent the past few days in a Sydney hospital, with his condition said to be improving slightly.
The Rabbitohs stated that their thoughts are with Merritt and his family, and they are glad to hear directly from them that his condition is getting better.
They reassured Merritt that he is being taken care of by the best medical practitioners and that he has the support of everyone connected to the club.
The club acknowledged that Merritt's recovery will be a slow process but encouraged him to keep fighting with the South Sydney spirit, reminding him that he will always be a Rabbitoh.
