South Sydney has restarted contract negotiations after pausing them to assess its salary cap and the futures of Tallis Duncan and Latrell Mitchell.
Duncan has re-signed for three years, while the Rabbitohs will not discuss Mitchell's contract until at least March and are prepared to risk him testing free agency.
News Corp reports the club's board is preparing a three-year offer for David Fifita, which could keep the second-rower at South Sydney until the end of the decade.
The 26-year-old is contracted through the end of 2027, but could enter free agency on November 1; there is no indication he intends to leave.
Fifita joined the Rabbitohs after seeking a Gold Coast Titans exit, with the Titans continuing to pay a large share of his salary.
Under Wayne Bennett, he has regained form across 17 appearances in 2026 and came close to Queensland State of Origin selection.
He will represent the PM's XIII in Port Moresby on Saturday afternoon.
With many Rabbitohs players off contract at the end of 2027, the club could not delay decisions on everyone; Fifita is its next priority after Duncan.
