South Sydney extend Smith through 2028

South Sydney’s ‘non-negotiable’ amid $1.4m debate as ‘tough decisions’ hinge on finals fate

Wayne Bennett's coaching has helped Brandon Smith enjoy his football at South Sydney, the hooker said.

"Wayne Bennett as a coach has allowed me to enjoy my football," Smith said.

Smith has confirmed he will stay with the Rabbitohs through to the end of 2028, extending his existing deal by one year.

He cannot negotiate with rival clubs until at least November 1 next year.

"Me and my partner have found a home here at the South Sydney Rabbitohs," Smith said.

"I always wanted to play in these colours, and being able to do that for another couple of years makes me very happy," he added.

Smith joined midway through 2025 and has played 22 matches for South Sydney, including 17 this year.

Injuries and an alleged off-field incident disrupted his start at the club.

After missing much of 2025 through injury, he has secured a regular place at dummy half, starting all but one of his games this year.

His defence has kept his tackle success below 90 per cent, while his service from the ruck has contributed to South Sydney's free-flowing attack.

Peter Mamouzelos is set to leave despite having a year left on his contract, while Adam Elliott's future remains uncertain.

Smith and Bronson Garlick are likely to form the club's hooker pairing next season; Jamie Humphreys could also cover the position and is likely to re-sign after reversing his move to the Perth Bears.
