In the midst of the controversy surrounding Sam Burgess' sudden departure from the South Sydney Rabbitohs, coach Jason Demetriou has forcefully denied allegations that he is "too soft" on star players Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker.

Assistant coaches Burgess and John Morris were reportedly frustrated with Demetriou's treatment of Mitchell and Walker, claiming that they were not being held to the same standards as their teammates.

However, Demetriou has firmly defended his coaching approach.

Despite Burgess leaving the club just weeks before the NRL finals, the Rabbitohs maintain that the decision was driven by his desire to focus on the impending birth of his child and his move to Warrington next year.

Meanwhile, Mitchell has faced significant criticism for his recent performances, particularly after a video emerged of him "shot-gunning" a beer on-stage at a Luke Combs concert.

Addressing the situation, Demetriou argued that Mitchell's actions were not inappropriate and that many NRL players were likely in attendance at the concert.

He emphasized that Mitchell showed dedication to his training and drove the standards within the team.

Furthermore, Demetriou refuted claims that Mitchell and Walker are exerting too much influence within the club, stating that Mitchell is an important part of the leadership team.

Demetriou's comments were made during a media appearance alongside chief executive Blake Solly, demonstrating a united front in response to the criticism.

As the Rabbitohs navigate these challenges, it remains to be seen how the team will perform in the upcoming NRL finals and how Mitchell and Walker will respond to the ongoing scrutiny.
