Slater Steps Down, Future of Maroons Uncertain

The early favourite... and bolter you can’t ignore: Contenders to replace Slater

Billy Slater has announced that he will step down from his role as coach of the Queensland Maroons, confirming he will not return for the 2027 State of Origin series.

This opens the opportunity for a new leader to take the helm.

Slater, who took on the coaching position before the 2022 series, successfully guided the Maroons to three series victories within five years.

Reflecting on his time, Slater expressed, "From being a boy who idolised this team, to a player, to guiding a group that has inspired the State, this has been one of the most rewarding things I've done in my life."

He added, "I want to thank the players, this group gave everything for the jersey, for each other and the State, and I'm proud of what we've built together."

Slater's closing sentiment was heartfelt: "Being a Queenslander has always been a huge part of who I am, and that will never change."

This unexpected announcement has already ignited discussions about potential successors who could lead Queensland into a new chapter by 2027.
