The Queensland Rugby League has announced that Billy Slater, the head coach of the Maroons, will resign from his position, effective immediately.
Taking on the role in 2022, Slater led the team to victory in three out of five series during his tenure.
He secured series wins in 2022, 2023, and 2025, but unfortunately faced defeats in home deciders in both 2024 and 2026.
As a celebrated former player with the Melbourne Storm and Queensland Maroons, this announcement is likely to ignite speculation regarding Slater's future as the potential next coach of the Melbourne Storm.
Current head coach Craig Bellamy has hinted that he may step down following the 2027 season, and Slater is among several candidates being considered for the position, which has been vacant since 2003.
Despite this, Slater's desire to continue coaching at the NRL level remains uncertain, especially considering his other commitments and ties in Queensland.
Explaining his choice, the former fullback reflected on the challenges of stepping down, sharing that it was a pivotal moment for him.
"From being a boy who idolised this team, to a player, to guiding a group that has inspired the State, this has been one of the most rewarding things I've done in my life," Slater stated.
He added, "I want to thank the players, this group gave everything for the jersey, for each other and the State, and I'm proud of what we've built together."
