Billy Slater to Step Down as Head Coach of the Maroons

Billy Slater is set to step down as head coach of the Maroons, ending his five-year tenure, as announced by Queensland Rugby League (QRL).

He will not be returning for the upcoming 2027 State of Origin series.

Slater took the reins of the Queensland team in 2021, leading them into the 2022 series.

Though he emphasized that the choice wasn't made easily, the 43-year-old has decided that now is the appropriate time to step away.

"I want to thank the players, this group gave everything for the jersey, for each other and the State, and I'm proud of what we've built together," Slater stated.

"And to my fellow Queenslanders, thank you for the trust you put in me to be the coach."

In response, QRL chair Brian Canavan expressed gratitude towards Slater for his significant contributions to both the Maroons and the sport in Queensland.

"His impact on the organisation and on Queenslanders everywhere will be felt long after his tenure as coach concludes," he remarked.

The Queensland Rugby League has stated they will soon initiate the search for the next head coach of the Maroons.
