Shaun Lane, a notable player for the Parramatta Eels, recently announced his retirement from the NRL after completing 186 games.
Despite the unexpected nature of his decision, the 30-year-old and 2022 Eels Player of the Year candidly shared his reasoning behind stepping away from the sport.
"There was never really one distinct moment where I was like 'Nah, this is it, I'm done,'" Lane explained during an appearance on 2GB's Wide World of Sports.
He elaborated that the contemplation of retirement unfolded over an extended period, specifically the last 18 months, during which he found himself gradually thinking about it more often.
"I was having less and less fun, [less] enjoyment, and was experiencing less motivation to go out there," Lane admitted, highlighting the decline in his enjoyment of the game.
While he acknowledged that concerns regarding his future as a player accumulated over nearly two years, he did identify a definitive moment that ultimately led to his decision to retire.
