The Cronulla Sharks secured their spot in the upcoming Jersey Flegg Finals series after defeating the Newcastle Knights in a tense match on Sunday.

The Sharks had a commanding lead of 30-12 with about 15 minutes remaining, but a quick succession of three tries by the Knights narrowed the margin.

However, the Sharks showed composure and determination to hold on for a 30-26 victory.

This win allowed them to surpass the Penrith Panthers and finish in third position on the competition ladder.

With the Flegg Finals format consisting of five teams, the Sharks will now face a qualifying Final against the second-placed Bulldogs.

The winner of this match will then go on to face the minor premiers, the Roosters, while the loser will take on the winner of the four vs.

five match featuring the Storm and Panthers.

In their match against the Knights, the Sharks displayed their late-season form by scoring three tries in the first half, all of which were converted by Kristian Dixon.

This gave them an 18-12 lead at halftime.

Dixon added another try and conversion soon after the break, extending the Sharks' lead to 12 points.

Backrower Henry O'Kane then scored another try, putting the Sharks in a strong position at 30-12.

However, the momentum shifted in favor of the Knights, and the Sharks found themselves desperately holding on to secure the win, third place on the table, and a chance in the upcoming Flegg Finals.

Although the Sharks have proven their worth in recent weeks, eliminating the Jets from the NSW Cup race, they may also welcome back key players such as Blake Hosking, Sam Healey, and Manaia Waitere for their match against the Bulldogs.
