Cronulla Sharks Facing Major Setback After Cameron McInnes Injury

The Cronulla Sharks will need to push for a top-four finish without their key lock, Cameron McInnes, who suffered a ruptured ACL during their victory over the Gold Coast Titans. The Sharks achieved a strong 54-22 win, with Braydon Trindall and Nicho Hynes proving instrumental in dismantling the weakened Titans side.

Despite the Sharks' inconsistent performance in 2025, the partnership between Hynes and Trindall showcased their potential for significant impact when combined with their outside backs. However, coach Craig Fitzgibbon will lament the loss of his captain, as medical scans have confirmed a lengthy recovery period ahead for McInnes.

"Sharks captain Cameron McInnes faces a lengthy recovery period after scans on Monday confirmed a ruptured ACL," the Sharks stated. McInnes will miss the rest of the season and is likely to be sidelined at the beginning of the 2026 season as well.

This marks the second time the 31-year-old has suffered an ACL rupture, having previously injured the other knee while playing for the Dragons in 2021. McInnes's injury represents a significant setback for the Sharks and their aspirations for the NRL premiership.

The workhorse has had notable achievements, including playing in State of Origin Game 1 last year due to his strong defensive abilities. He holds the record for most tackles made in a single NRL match and ranks third for most tackles this season, with teammate Blayke Brailey currently leading.

Importantly, coach Fitzgibbon has utilized McInnes exclusively in the lock position for premiership matches, emphasizing the gap his absence will create. However, the coach also sees this as a chance for another player to rise to the occasion.

"It'll be an opportunity for someone else to step up as a leader," Fitzgibbon remarked, recognizing McInnes's likely season-ending status. Compounding the Sharks' challenges is the absence of second-rower Briton Nikora, who faces a three-game suspension after a recent incident.
