The Cronulla Sharks have successfully recruited one of rugby union's most promising young talents, Leo Jaques, who has signed a three-year deal starting in 2027 after obtaining a release from his NSW Waratahs contract.
Jaques joins the Sharks following his recent stint representing Australia at the World Rugby Under-20 Championship held in Georgia, alongside making his debut in Super Rugby last year. Despite efforts from Rugby Union to keep the skilled outside back, the Sharks emerged victorious in acquiring his services as he decided to return to rugby league.
Standing 6'3" and weighing around 100kg, Jaques boasts an impressive combination of size, athleticism, and potential, making him a coveted asset for the Sharks as they aim to bolster their outside back lineup for the future.
Though his recent years have been spent in rugby union, Jaques has a background in the 13-man code. He played rugby league until he was 16 and was part of the Sydney Roosters' Harold Matthews squad before making the switch. Rugby league also runs in his family, with his grandfather having played for the North Sydney Bears.
The Sharks are confident that Jaques possesses the skills necessary to evolve into a solid NRL player and are looking forward to the contributions he will make to the club in the years ahead.
"Along with being an outstanding athlete, Leo has the attitude, character and work ethic we believe will complement the players already in the squad," Sharks Head of Football Darren Mooney said.
"Once Leo made the decision to explore his options in rugby league, he attracted interest from a number of NRL clubs. He also had several opportunities to remain in rugby union, so we are delighted that he has chosen the Sharks to begin his NRL journey.
"We look forward to supporting his development and are excited about what he can bring to the club both on and off the field."
Jaques will spend the remainder of the 2026 season engaging with the Sharks' NRL training environment before commencing full-time training during the 2027 pre-season.
