Fitzgibbon Faces Contract Conundrum Before Round One
Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon is optimistic that his team can transform prevailing uncertainties into a source of motivation as they gear up for their first match of the season against the Gold Coast Titans, now led by his former assistant, Josh Hannay.
As Round 1 approaches, the Sharks find themselves on the brink of potential roster changes at the end of the year. Eight out of the 19 players selected for the upcoming Titans game are set to become free agents after 2026, with a total of 16 players in similar situations throughout the squad.
However, Fitzgibbon perceives the impending decisions as a potential competitive edge rather than a distraction.
"It's part of the deal, it happens to some clubs at times," Fitzgibbon remarked during a recent press briefing.
Notable players with uncertain futures include Cameron McInnes, Will Kennedy, Jesse Ramien, Sione Katoa, Siosifa Talakai, Toby Rudolf, and Braden Hamlin-Uele.
Talakai's case has shed light on the realities of the NRL market, with Fitzgibbon recognizing the club's pivotal role in nurturing talents who eventually land lucrative contracts elsewhere.
"We're proud of ourselves for developing (Talakai) as a player, for him to go and have a contract like that and look after his family. He wanted to stay, so it hurts," Fitzgibbon stated.
While the presence of many players on expiring contracts may suggest significant turnover, the coach noted that the team has tackled the issue directly in the pre-season.
"It's been discussed internally, but we wanted to bring it up, address it, so we can put it to bed and get back to business," he explained.
