SIX Potential Landing Spots for Scott Drinkwater
As the saying goes in rugby league, "where there is smoke, there is fire."
A bombshell report surfaced late last week suggesting North Queensland Cowboys fullback Scott Drinkwater is "no guarantee to be offered a new contract at the club beyond the end of 2027."
On the surface, that seems like an incredibly easy call to make on a player who has been among the best fullbacks in the game in recent times, often single-handedly providing the attacking force for Todd Payten's struggling outfit.
However, the Cowboys are facing challenges, and Payten is under significant pressure, making potential roster changes a reasonable consideration for the Townsville-based club.
Drinkwater, originally from Sydney and who has also played in Melbourne, would likely not want to remain at the Cowboys in 2027 if he knew his contract was not being renewed.
Additionally, the Cowboys are seeking salary cap flexibility at a time when they have few players contracted beyond the end of 2026. If they decide to do so, they could undertake a significant rebuild of their roster.
It is certainly plausible that Scott Drinkwater is about to enter his final season with the Cowboys, but where could he potentially land?
