Samoa's Fa'alogo faces Tonga wing test

Sua Fa'alogo

Samoa coach Ben Gardiner says Sua Fa'alogo brings a strong connection to the country's traditions and heritage into the World Cup camp.

"It is pretty cool to have a player in camp that was born in Samoa and can bring experience around the traditions, culture and heritage," Gardiner said.

The 23-year-old Melbourne player of the year has scored six tries in two matches, with nine line breaks and four try assists.

He moved to the wing after Deine Mariner injured a hamstring in Samoa's opening game, a 78-4 win over France, where Fa'alogo scored four tries.

He added two tries in the 64-6 victory over Papua New Guinea.

Although Fa'alogo's standout season for the Storm came at fullback, Gardiner said he had adapted well to the wing.

"I've been really impressed and we had great belief and confidence in the fact that he could shine," Gardiner said.

Samoa meet Tonga in a sold-out Parramatta clash on Sunday night. Both teams have reached the semi-finals, and the winner will avoid Australia; the result will also determine their opponents.

Gardiner expects strong support for the two rivals, whose communities back them around the world.

"You will see lots of flags on the street and on cars not just here but all over the world."

Lock Francis Manuleleua has been man of the match in both Samoa games after a breakout rookie season in Newcastle's second row.

"He is a great team player and brings huge energy," Gardiner said.
