Samoa's Crichton takes halves lessons to centre

RLWC2026: Critter Ready to Take Centre Stage for Samoa

More than 1,000 supporters attended a Samoa fan day last week, while the team's week-three match against Tonga has already sold out.

Samoa's Friday World Cup opener against France at CommBank Stadium is its only other Sydney match, and looms as a must-win under the tournament format.

Stephen Crichton's side hopes to repeat its run to the 2022 final, which included his extra-time field goal to defeat England in the semi-final.

Crichton, 26, will return to centre after moving to five-eighth midway through Canterbury's difficult NRL season.

Coach Cameron Ciraldo made the switch seeking to revive the Bulldogs' attack, and Crichton helped drive a late-season surge, though the team missed the finals.

"It's taken my game to another level now going back to centre," Crichton said. "Not just in attack but defensively as well."

He said playing in the halves helped him understand how centres can support their teammates.

Crichton said the support following Samoa's 2022 campaign brought new expectations, and urged the team to focus on the present.

"The fans come out and pay money to watch us play so we'll give that energy back to them especially at the fan days. It's cool seeing all the videos and parades and the best way to celebrate is to win. That's what we're out to do."

The campaign also reunites Crichton with former Penrith teammates Brian To'o, Spencer Leniu and Jarome Luai, who helped Samoa reach the 2022 final.
