Newcastle Knights enforcer Jacob Saifiti's season appears to be over following a dangerous tackle on Warriors winger Luke Laulilii. This incident coincides with Jett Cleary's NRL debut, which he showcased in front of Ivan and Nathan.
The Knights jumped to a 10-0 lead at Mt Smart Stadium when Saifiti's reckless moment altered the match. He charged at Laulilii, who was juggling the ball, and made contact with the winger's head. Saifiti instantly raised his hands in apology, but he was sent off just 13 minutes into the game.
This tackle may also end Saifiti's season unless the Knights progress far into the NRL finals. Earlier this season, Jaydn Su'A received a three-game suspension after a similar incident involving Cameron Murray.
During the half-time break on Fox Sports, Luke Keary lamented the situation for both Saifiti and the Knights, predicting he would miss the elimination game in two weeks. Keary noted, "He would be devastated. He just got it completely wrong."
Fans reacted with shock at Laulilii's tackle, deemed one of the worst in years. Despite the Knights' efforts, the Warriors triumphed 46-32, climbing to the top of the NRL standings.
Cleary was unexpectedly promoted to the starting lineup when Te Maire Martin was unable to recover from a hamstring strain before Round 26. Luke Hanson might have been chosen to partner Chanel Harris-Tavita in the halves, but he was also sidelined.
Cleary's family scrambled to Auckland to witness his debut, with Ivan and Nathan in attendance. The 21-year-old initially struggled, missing several tackles as the Knights surged to a 16-0 lead. However, as the Warriors capitalized on their advantage, Cleary found his stride.
His impressive debut featured three try assists, marking the most by a debutant since Tim Smith in 2005. Cleary enjoyed the moment, especially with his family present, as he prepares to relocate next year.
Although under contract through 2027, Cleary requested an early release to join the Panthers and play under his father, Ivan, before he steps down as coach. With brother Nathan also off contract at the end of 2027, this might be their best chance to unite at the same club.
