The Roosters face major changes to their backline before the 2027 NRL season, with Mark Nawaqanitawase departing for rugby union and Daniel Tupou retiring.
Hugo Savala is likely to return to five-eighth after playing centre for much of the year, while Daly Cherry-Evans is leaving for English Super League.
Reuben Garrick is set to join the club, but a move for Murray Taulagi fell through; the departing Cowboys winger is instead heading overseas to rugby union.
Those changes could give Billy Smith a permanent place in the back five, while Cody Ramsey and Rex Bassingthwaighte may compete with Tommy Talau for a wing spot.
News Corp reports Talau has re-signed through 2027 on a one-year deal, having been due to come off contract after 2026. The 26-year-old could earn more minutes and a chance to prove his value.
Talau made 47 appearances for Wests Tigers and 36 for Manly before injuries limited him to five games in his first Roosters season.
He has played one Test for Samoa but was overlooked for this year's Rugby League World Cup squad.
