The Sydney Roosters have proudly introduced their inaugural NRLW Indigenous jersey, which will be worn during Rounds 6 and 7 of the 2025 season.
This jersey is more than a garment; "more than just history, it's hers." It celebrates identity, storytelling, and connection, marking a significant moment in the Club's history. While Indigenous designs have been featured in the men's program, this is the first jersey that embodies the unique identity, narratives, and strength of the women's side. For Olivia Kernick, it signifies a personal milestone in the evolving NRLW legacy.
Created by Tylah Mundine, a proud Bundjalung woman from Sydney, the jersey narrates a story that spans from the bottom to the top, forming a layered visual narrative. It intertwines the Roosters' proud history, current stars, and the future of the game.
The lower layer of the design showcases flowing linework that symbolizes lineage, connecting athletes across generations within women's rugby league and beyond. These lines resemble tree roots, representing the foundational efforts of those who paved the way for today's players. Additionally, totems honoring past Indigenous Sydney Roosters players are included, celebrating their culture and legacy while acknowledging their vital contributions to women's rugby league.
At the core of the jersey is Olivia Kernick, the 2024 Dally M Medal winner and proud Indigenous woman whose ascent within the Roosters has inspired many. The totem in the design symbolizes Liv, while surrounding rivers reflect her numerous journeys both on and off the field, with circular elements acknowledging key milestones in her career.
Mundine's artwork flows upward, culminating in a depiction of the future. By reimagining the Roosters' traditional red V, native flora elements signify growth, culture, and legacy. Inspired partly by NRLW Head Coach John Strange, these elements reconnect to the jersey's root system, symbolizing the Roosters' commitment to nurturing athletes and the wider community.
The jersey will be worn exclusively in Rounds 6 and 7 against the Titans and Knights. While it won't be available for retail purchase, fans can bid on match-worn jerseys in an auction, with proceeds benefiting the Kari Foundation to support Indigenous youth and community programs.
