South Sydney Rabbitohs winger Alex Johnston has been confirmed to have damaged his ribs, but his return timeline is uncertain.

Johnston, who recently returned to the NRL after recovering from an Achilles injury, suffered the rib injury while scoring his first try of the year.

Despite initially clutching at his shoulder, Johnston continued playing until halftime but was eventually substituted out of the game by coach Wayne Bennett.

The Rabbitohs have now disclosed that Johnston has an upper rib injury, with the club describing his status as a "week to week proposition" with no definite return date set.
