Rabbitohs to honour Freeman's legacy at inaugural Gadhu Gathering
The South Sydney Rabbitohs are set to celebrate the legacy of Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman when they play against Parramatta in Saturday's Indigenous Round match.
Before the game, Freeman will ring the club's Legacy Bell, and Rabbitohs Indigenous icon Greg Inglis will lead the team onto the field.
Freeman became a symbol of national unity after winning gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, shortly after she lit the cauldron during the Opening Ceremony.
In the years following her retirement, Freeman has continued to motivate Indigenous communities and has formed a strong bond with the Rabbitohs.
This past year, Freeman met the team following their match against Melbourne and will travel to Sydney for Saturday's event.
The Rabbitohs have long been recognized as a positive influence within Indigenous communities, with 11 members of the current men's squad being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander individuals.
An iconic image of Freeman and Inglis was captured in the Rabbitohs' dressing rooms after the team's significant 2014 grand final victory, with Tallis Duncan emphasizing the importance of honoring their legacy both on and off the field.
