After playing an instrumental role in the South Sydney Rabbitohs' playoff run in the SG Ball Cup earlier this year, young playmaker Taj Alvarez has secured his first NRL contract.
In a move to build for the future, the Rabbitohs have awarded Alvarez a long-term deal. He was recognized as the club's Players' Player of the Year in the Under-19s division, having participated in all 11 matches, scored 13 tries, and successfully converted one kick.
This contract allows him to join the club's development list in 2028, with plans to transition to the Top 30 roster for the 2029 NRL season.
Currently signed under a New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) contract for the next two years, Alvarez recently made his debut in the Jersey Flegg Cup. However, he will not return this season due to an injury sustained during the Under-18s ASSRL National Championships.
Originally a halfback, Alvarez switched to five-eighth a couple of years ago and has quickly demonstrated significant potential since joining the Rabbitohs this season, especially with his effective partnership with Matthew Humphries.
A junior from the Terrigal-Wamberal Sharks, he has drawn comparisons to Canterbury Bulldogs icon Terry Lamb. At just 18 years old, he remains eligible to participate in the SG Ball Cup again in 2026.
