The South Sydney Rabbitohs are proactively working to extend coach Wayne Bennett's contract until 2028, following speculation about his potential move to coach the Papua New Guinea (PNG) squad after his current deal ends in 2027.

Reports from zerotackle.com indicate discussions have commenced to secure Bennett's future in Redfern.

Contrary to expectations of retirement after 2027, the Sydney Morning Herald suggests Bennett has expressed a desire to continue coaching beyond his existing contract.

Rabbitohs chief executive Blake Solly acknowledged Bennett's significant contributions during challenging times, stating, "Wayne and the staff have done a tremendous job in difficult circumstances this season." The Rabbitohs' move to extend Bennett's stay demonstrates their commitment to retaining his experienced leadership as they navigate the current season and future challenges.
