Former South Sydney Rabbitohs players Ryan Gray and Shaquai Mitchell have both secured contracts with a new club for the 2026 rugby league season, allowing them to extend their professional careers.
Mitchell was among the nine players released by the Rabbitohs following the 2025 season. Initially, he had plans to move abroad to join the Super League after drawing interest from two teams. However, he opted to remain in Australia, signing a one-year deal with the Tweed Seagulls to join former Rabbitohs assistant coach Joe O'Callaghan.
As the older brother of Latrell Mitchell, Shaquai spent the past four seasons with the Rabbitohs, making 20 first-grade appearances. His time was marred in 2025 when he could only play 11 reserve-grade matches due to injury.
"The Tweed Seagulls RLFC are excited to welcome Shaquai Mitchell to the club for the 2026 Hostplus Cup season," a statement read.
"Mitchell is a powerful, mobile middle forward who made his NRL debut with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Round 8 of the 2022 season, going on to play 20 games for the club.
"A proud Indigenous man from Taree, Mitchell has represented the NRL Indigenous All Stars on four occasions and proudly captained the side in the 2025 fixture."
