The South Sydney Rabbitohs' esteemed coach Wayne Bennett, who has been a sought-after figure in the rugby league, appears set to stay with the club for the foreseeable future.
As reported by the Daily Telegraph, Bennett is anticipated to sign a contract extension that would keep him in Redfern until at least the end of the 2028 NRL season.
Although Bennett's current contract extends to the end of 2027, Rabbitohs officials have engaged in advanced discussions with the 75-year-old coach to extend his contract further. This decision is part of a larger initiative aimed at providing stability and effective leadership while the club navigates substantial roster changes.
Blake Solly, the Rabbitohs' chief executive, along with the senior management, have expressed their desire for Bennett to conclude his coaching career with the Rabbitohs. Reports suggest a new offer is under consideration to secure his position through the 2028 season.
"We understand the ARLC will be interested in Wayne taking a role with the PNG team but we are very keen for him to stay beyond his current deal," Solly informed the Daily Telegraph in October.
Momentum in the extension discussions has built up through 2025, as the club aims for continuity in its football department's leadership.
Bennett, being one of the most seasoned coaches in rugby league history with over 1,200 games coached across various clubs and international teams, is viewed by the Rabbitohs as a key element in structuring the squad for the upcoming season and beyond.
