Rabbitohs chase Roosters star as contract expires

South Sydney Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett has expressed interest in signing Sydney Roosters star Brandon Smith, who will become a free agent at the end of the season after a lackluster performance with the Roosters.

Despite reports of Smith's struggles to meet expectations at the Bondi-based club and his high salary, Bennett remains keen on bringing him to the Rabbitohs, even though he is currently recovering from a serious injury.

Bennett's interest in Smith dates back to when the Rabbitohs were attempting to secure him for the newly established Dolphins team, even though their history has been controversial.

The renowned coach made his intentions clear by confirming, "Well, I wanted him at the Dolphins and nothing's changed." This statement indicates that Bennett's desire to acquire Smith's services remains strong, regardless of any past issues.

On the other hand, the Roosters are reportedly unlikely to renew Smith's contract as they focus on signing new marquee players in the future.

After spending six seasons and playing 107 matches with the Melbourne Storm before joining the Roosters in 2023, Smith has struggled to showcase his full potential and find consistency at his new club.

These factors, combined with his high salary, have led to speculation that he will be seeking a new team next season.

Despite Smith's current injury and uncertain future with the Roosters, Bennett's open interest in signing him reflects the Rabbitohs' willingness to take a chance on the talented New Zealand international.

As the offseason approaches, it will be intriguing to see whether this potential transfer will come to fruition and how Smith's career trajectory may change with a new team like the Rabbitohs.
