The South Sydney Rabbitohs have initiated contract negotiations with coach Wayne Bennett amid speculation linking him to the NRL's new team, the PNG Chiefs.

Bennett, who returned to the Rabbitohs this year under a three-year deal lasting until the conclusion of the 2027 NRL season, is widely regarded as the premier coach in NRL history, with coaching experience dating back to 1987 and his involvement in the Queensland Rugby League since 1977.

Since June, the Rabbitohs have expressed interest in extending Bennett's contract. According to The Daily Telegraph, discussions are currently underway to secure his position beyond 2027, with advanced talks taking place regarding a new agreement.

The negotiations are expected to wrap up by mid-December and are likely to result in either a one-year extension or possibly a two-year deal, which would keep Bennett at the club until the end of 2029.

"We understand the ARLC will be interested in Wayne taking a role with the PNG team but we are very keen for him to stay beyond his current deal," noted CEO Blake Solly in his comments to the publication.

"Hopefully we'll have those discussions over this off-season."

If Bennett's contract is extended for two additional seasons, he would be 79 years old by the final year, surpassing the landmark of 1000 matches coached.
