NSW legend Brad Fittler has opened up about the 'uncomfortable' atmosphere in the Channel 9 studio after State of Origin clashes with current Maroons coach Billy Slater.

Fittler, who took on the NSW head coach role in 2018 and led the Blues to back-to-back series wins, faced off against Slater in a fierce rivalry.

Slater, a legendary Maroons fullback who took over the Queensland coaching role in 2021, managed to secure two victories over Fittler's Blues, leading to criticism of Fittler's team selections.

The pressure eventually led Fittler to step down from the role in 2024, with Michael Maguire taking over and handing Slater his first series defeat as a coach.

Despite their on-field rivalry, Fittler and Slater found themselves working together as analysts on Channel 9 footy, adding another layer of competition to their relationship.

Fittler finished his Origin coaching career with nine wins and nine losses, but it was the battles in the studio that really tested their professional relationship.

Speaking on SEN Radio's The Saturday Session, Fittler acknowledged that the passion from their Origin clashes spilled over into their work environment, making it tough to face Slater after a defeat.

The sporting world may have seen the last of Fittler's coaching days, but the memories of his intense rivalry with Slater will certainly not be forgotten.
