Premiership Coach Joins PNG Chiefs

The PNG Chiefs are excited to welcome a premiership-winning coach with deep-rooted ties to the sport, as they feel they've acquired a vital piece for their 2028 plans.

Luke Burt, an iconic figure in the history of the Parramatta Eels, is joining the Chiefs as an assistant coach.

Having dedicated 14 seasons to Parramatta, Burt made 264 appearances and found the try line 124 times.

He holds the title of the club's all-time leading tryscorer and participated in the Grand Finals of 2001 and 2009.

Additionally, Burt will serve in a specialized role focusing on goal-kicking, leveraging his renowned accuracy during high-pressure situations that marked his playing days.

Transitioning into coaching, Burt began with the Eels and later the Gold Coast Titans, where he took on the role of interim head coach in 2019.

Following this, he joined the Burleigh Bears in 2020, progressively developing a remarkable program.

As head coach for the 2023 season, he led the team to a Minor Premiership and a Grand Final appearance in his first year, improving further the next season by securing the premiership trophy.

This impressive coaching record captured the interest of Michael Chammas, General Manager of Football for the PNG Chiefs, and Burt's recent visit to the nation confirmed their decision.

"He had an exceptional career as a player, but what excites us the most is what he has done as a coach," Chammas stated in the club's official announcement.
