Ponga's Controversial Exit Marks Origin History

‘I bleed blue, but...’: Maroons superstar SENT off as ‘outrageous’ Origin controversy erupts

The Maroons' standout Kalyn Ponga has made history by becoming the seventh player ever to be sent off in Origin history, following a contentious shoulder charge during the series opener.

Ponga intervened in cover defense as Tolu Koula broke down the left sideline while Queensland held a 20-6 lead, but ended up colliding with the Blues winger's head.

Unfortunately, Koula had to leave the field and subsequently failed his head injury assessment.

On-field referee Ashley Klein appeared to disregard the Bunker's suggestion for a sin bin, opting instead to dismiss Ponga entirely from the match.

"It's a shoulder charge that makes direct contact to the head. You have a duty of care, you're off," Klein explained while sending Ponga off for the final 23 minutes.

This decision left Blues legend Andrew Johns in a state of disbelief.
