As the 2026 NRL season approaches, the rugby league community is buzzing with speculation about who will don the starting fullback role for Queensland in State of Origin.

Reece Walsh wrapped up his season in spectacular fashion, clinching the Clive Churchill Medal for an outstanding grand final display, making him a strong contender for the coveted jersey.

In contrast, Kalyn Ponga's season was disappointing, ending prematurely due to a broken bone in his foot, although he did start at fullback in the initial two State of Origin matches.

Ponga acknowledges that the competition for the position is still ongoing and believes that their mutual ambition will drive them to perform at their best. "I think it's been awesome over the last three years, probably, with Reece," Ponga shared with The Sydney Morning Herald. "We've always had this thing where we want to fight for that position. I think whoever earns it, earns it. That's the way it is in the Queensland jumper. I definitely want that jersey. I'll be doing everything I can to get it."
