The chiefs of Papua New Guinea have initiated an exciting chapter in rugby league history with a bold announcement.
According to reports, Alex Johnston, who holds the title of the NRL's leading try scorer, has agreed to join their ranks.
The Daily Telegraph notes that the Rabbitohs winger is set to be the first athlete to sign with the incoming 19th club, paving the way for PNG's anticipated debut in 2028.
The 31-year-old has reportedly inked a one-year deal valued at around $325,000, which is tax-exempt.
Negotiations concluded on a Monday night, and Johnston shared the news with his teammates and Wayne Bennett the next day.
Previously, he signed an extension with the Rabbitohs that included a provision permitting him to sign with the PNG Chiefs before November 1.
Johnston has the full endorsement of Bennett and will fulfill his obligations to the Rabbitohs throughout the 2027 season, after which he will lead the Chiefs' ambitious journey.
The Chiefs are also interested in Jarome Luai, who, due to current player options, is not tied to a contract and can explore opportunities with the team.
