PNG Chiefs Make Notable Player Signings

Squad Builders: The TEN Value Players PNG Chiefs Should Eye for 2028

The PNG Chiefs are actively constructing their inaugural team well ahead of the November 1 deadline.

This expansion club has exceeded expectations by making three quality signings, despite initial concerns about their ability to attract players due to their location.

Currently, only two signings are official. Jarome Luai was the first to join, exercising an out clause in his long-standing contract with the Wests Tigers. Additionally, Alex Johnston received approval from the South Sydney Rabbitohs to negotiate with the Chiefs, despite being under contract until 2027.

Recently, it has been confirmed that Connor Watson, who has been allowed to negotiate his future away from the Sydney Roosters, is also on board.

These signings may mark the last official additions before November 1, but the Chiefs will continue to dominate discussions as players contemplate their futures, waiting to see if they can join this potentially competitive team in a rugby league fervent nation, all while benefiting from tax-free salaries.

However, despite the attractive tax incentives tied to PNG's salary cap, they can't just offer top dollar to every player.
