PNG Chiefs' kit prompts Warriors comparisons

PNG Chiefs chief executive Lorna McPherson described the club's identity reveal as a milestone ahead of its 2028 debut.

"Today marks one of the most significant milestones in the journey of the PNG Chiefs," McPherson said.

She said, "This is the first time that the club has its true, complete identity ...a logo and jersey that the players, partners and fans can hold to as their own."

The club unveiled its logo and two 2028 strips on Wednesday, choosing a white kit and a predominantly black alternative.

The white strip is expected to be the home option because of the heat.

Fans questioned whether the black design looked too much like the Warriors' kit, while others compared it to the Kiwis' dark strip.

Some also felt the jerseys failed to make the statement the club may have intended by departing from the Kumuls' red, black and yellow colours.

NRL reporter David Riccio praised the logo: "The logo, I think is fantastic…really menacing logo. And then a predominantly black with gold V," he said.

He said, "I was a little bit surprised it was not the nation's official colours of red and yellow."

He continued, "Red, yellow, black."

Riccio added, "Which is why I think it will grab everyones attention, more so than what we thought it may have looked like…I really like it."

The logo drew a positive response, featuring a chief in a traditional feather headpiece with a cassowary bone in his mouth.

Its ceremonial red face paint references the nation's colours.

Jarome Luai was the first player signed by the Chiefs and is set to be their marquee man in 2028, with Willie Peters appointed coach.

The club is reportedly interested in Canberra Raiders second-rower Hudson Young.

Any bid could depend on how the NRL assesses his market value, while the Raiders are also trying to retain him.
