The Perth Bears have announced the addition of Niwhai Puru to their roster for their upcoming NRL season, reinforcing their halves lineup.
Puru will join the Bears on a two-year contract starting in 2027.
This season, he has appeared in three NRL matches for the Cronulla Sharks, making his debut in Round 13 against the Manly Sea Eagles, where he played as a halfback.
At just 24 years old, Puru boasts a background with the Penrith Panthers and has contributed to the success of the Newtown Jets, the Sharks' NSW Cup partner, helping them secure the 2024 NSW Cup premiership.
He has a connection with the Sharks through his twin brother, Hohepa Puru, who is also part of the team.
Furthermore, Puru participated in the 2025 NRL All Stars Game, proudly representing the Indigenous All Stars as a Mununjali and Githabal man.
The Bears initiated their interest in Puru after Jamie Humphreys decided against joining the club, which left the team looking for talent.
Excited about this new chapter, the halfback acknowledges the significance of being part of something bigger than just the game.
