Penrith's Cleary set for third surgery

Penrith expect Cleary back for round one next season, despite a third operation scheduled for next week.

He has not borne weight on his left foot since breaking his fibula and rupturing his syndesmosis in the preliminary final against Newcastle.

Phoenix Crossland's hip-drop tackle caused the injuries; a bone pierced Cleary's skin, requiring hospital surgery that day.

Two operations in late September and early October treated his left leg and pinned ankle, then his right fifth metatarsal.

He also sustained a "stress-related bone issue" against the Sydney Roosters in the qualifying final.

Tightrope surgery treats severe high ankle sprains by connecting ankle bones with braided rope for stability.

If no complications arise, Cleary could walk unaided within two weeks.

Cleary reportedly agreed to a two-year Panthers deal, with player options for years three and four potentially extending it through 2031, when he would be almost 34.

He reportedly rejected the PNG Chiefs' $8.4 million offer for 2028-30, including salary and third-party agreements.
