Penrith's Cleary Faces Friday Fitness Test

NRL

Penrith centre Paul Alamoti has been ruled out of Sunday's preliminary final against Newcastle because of a hamstring injury.

Blaize Talagi will again replace him on the wing, while Nathan Cleary remains named at halfback.

Cleary removed his moon boot this week and has resumed gym work after scans found a "stress-related bone issue" in his right foot.

The Panthers expect him to train under lights on Friday, with Jack Cole retained at five-eighth and Jack Cogger returning from suspension on the bench.

Co-captain Isaah Yeo said Cleary's workload would increase before the session.

"It will be pretty light at the start of the week for him, but that will ramp up for the G2 session (on Friday) it will be all systems go," Yeo said.

Penrith's confidence reflects a remarkable finals injury record since their dynasty began in 2020.

The Panthers have maintained 94 per cent player availability across finals, and no marquee player has missed a preliminary final or grand final through injury.

Hooker Mitch Kenny credited both good fortune and the club's athletic-performance management.

"We've developed a culture here that when the team needs you you are playing," Kenny said.

Yeo, who returned four weeks after rupturing his pectoral, also hopes to represent Australia at the World Cup.

"If I'm playing good enough footy I would like to put my hand up for it," Yeo said.
