Nathan Cleary had surgery on Monday for a compound fracture and double break in his left leg, sustained in Penrith's preliminary-final loss to Newcastle.
That night, the Rugby League Players' Association named him its players' champion of the year, an award voted on by players rather than experts and former players.
"Throughout this season, for club and state, Nathan has consistently played at a level even beyond his high standards," RLPA chief executive Clint Newton said.
Newton said Cleary's second win was a "massive honour" and praised his ability, professionalism, relentlessness and toughness.
Cleary first received the award in 2020 and is only the third player to win it more than once, after James Tedesco and Johnathan Thurston.
He was one of five finalists, alongside Tedesco, Herbie Farnworth, Erin Clark and Haumole Olakau'atu.
Cleary has also won NSW State of Origin player of the year and is expected to claim his first Dally M medal on Wednesday.
He will remain in hospital and miss the NRL awards ceremony.
Newton also sent his thoughts to Cleary and his family, wishing him well in his recovery.
