Harrison Graham was left out of Newcastle's travelling squad for the Las Vegas season opener, but is now expected to replace Phoenix Crossland at hooker in Sunday's NRL grand final against the Roosters.
The 25-year-old has played 19 games this season after joining Newcastle on a development contract for 2026, and has signed an extension for 2027.
Graham took over at No.9 when Crossland was sent off in last weekend's preliminary final, helping the 12-man Knights upset Penrith.
Crossland was referred straight to the judiciary over a hip-drop tackle on Nathan Cleary and is expected to be suspended.
He will learn his fate on Tuesday night, leaving Graham to prepare to cover for his close friend.
"He's been the best player all year so if he's not playing I've got massive shoes to fill. I want to do him and the club proud." Graham told NRL.com.
The Knights are pursuing a premiership after finishing last season with the wooden spoon. Suspended forward Jacob Saifiti has also missed the entire finals series, after a high shot in the Round 26 loss to the Warriors.
Captain Kalyn Ponga said Crossland's influence helped put the team in the grand final, and defended him against online criticism over the tackle.
