The NRL's preliminary-final schedule gives Friday's winner nine days before Sunday October 4, two more than Sunday's winner.
Announced Thursday, the games are Friday September 25 at 7.50pm and Sunday September 27 at 4.05pm, with no Saturday match for the second consecutive year.
The Dolphins host the Roosters-Sharks winner on Friday, while Penrith meets the Warriors-Knights winner on Sunday.
Fans questioned the allocation because Penrith finished first and the Dolphins third; the move seemingly avoids the AFL grand final.
Last year, the Storm and Sharks played Friday before the Broncos and Panthers on Sunday. Melbourne had the ladder advantage, but Brisbane won the grand final after the shorter turnaround.
Former NRL chief Andrew Abdo said seven days provided sufficient rest and recovery.
Corey Parker condemned the arrangement: "It's poorly done and somewhat selfish from the NRL. The scheduling is completely unfair. It's two days extra, it's so stupid."
