Penrith Cleary puts contract talks aside

Nathan Cleary's management has told the publication that club negotiations are not the priority while the Penrith halfback recovers.

Penrith have spoken with his representatives and know his expected salary if he explores deals with another NRL club.

Cleary will become a free agent for the first time in his career. His goal is full recovery and a return in round one of 2027.

His partner, Mary Fowler, recently withdrew from Matildas friendlies to be by his side.

Cleary had surgery on his left leg after Penrith's preliminary-final loss to Newcastle, then underwent a second operation on his right foot.

Greg Alexander said the left-leg injury involved a broken fibula and ruptured syndesmosis, which led to his ankle being pinned.

The right-foot break was initially described as a "stress-related bone issue" after the qualifying final against the Sydney Roosters.

Cleary received the Dally M Award at his parents' home because his own house was partly destroyed in March.

Penrith are also negotiating with Moses Leota, Liam Martin and Isaah Yeo, who want to stay at the club.
