The forthcoming debut of the 18th NRL franchise in 2028 has sparked a trademark dispute with New Zealand Rugby.
At the center of the controversy is the proposed name "Chiefs" for the new Papua New Guinea team.
This title is already associated with New Zealand Rugby's Super Rugby franchise, which has held the name since 1996.
NZ Rugby claims a breach of trademark rights due to the established identity of its Chiefs, whose colors and branding are well recognized.
The fear of confusion has intensified as the PNG franchise prepares to unveil its first jersey, showcasing the same red, black, and yellow color scheme next month.
In light of this situation, NZ Rugby is urging the NRL to reconsider the franchise name prior to the jersey's launch on October 21.
Legal action has not been ruled out as NZ Rugby seeks to protect its brand.
The organization noted, "The Chiefs have been a professional rugby club since 1996 and has an established identity and fan base, both in the Pacific region and globally."
This longstanding identity encompasses the team's name, logo, and signature colors, which NZ Rugby is eager to defend.
As the deadline approaches, it is becoming increasingly likely that the PNG franchise may need to adopt a new name altogether.
