Hohepa Puru has taken a significant step in his career by signing a two-year contract extension with the Cronulla Sharks, ensuring his stay until the end of the 2028 season.
Initially set to become a free agent after this season, the versatile forward expressed enthusiasm for continuing his journey with the team.
Puru, a former player for the Canberra Raiders, debuted in the NRL against Cronulla in 2023 before joining the Sharks and facing off against the Brisbane Broncos for his first match with the club.
Reflecting on his time at Cronulla, Puru shared his appreciation for the club and head coach Craig Fitzgibbon, stating, "I'm over the moon and very grateful to the club and to Fitzy for the player they have made me over the last few years."
He emphasized the impact of the club on his personal growth, saying, "The Sharks have helped make me a better man off the field around my little family at home and that correlates to on the field. I feel I've grown tremendously as a player and a person."
Although Puru's primary role is as a lock, he remains flexible and willing to fill any position as needed.
"I understand the system inside out and I'm happy to be a 'Mr Fix It,'" he added. "I'll play wherever they want me to play."
Darren Mooney, the General Manager of Football, praised Puru's contributions, particularly during a recent game against the Storm, highlighting his exceptional performance as he played the full 80 minutes at hooker.
"His versatility makes him an extremely important member of the squad, and he consistently delivers whenever and wherever we've needed him, without complaint," Mooney stated.
