NSW's mistakes lead to Maguire's exit; Slater explains

NSW only have themselves to blame for Michael Maguire's exit - and Billy Slater reveals exactly why

NSW only have themselves to blame for the departure of coach Michael Maguire to the Brisbane Broncos, according to Rugby League legend Billy Slater.

Reports suggest that NSW Blues officials are not happy with Maguire's decision to leave after just one series in charge.

However, it may be time for them to take a long hard look in the mirror and accept some responsibility for the situation.

A controversial move made by the NSW Rugby League board 12 months ago may have ultimately pushed Maguire towards the Broncos.

Formerly on a full-time contract, Maguire saw the role reduced to a part-time, four-month position after Brad Fittler stepped down.

Fittler himself declined a one-year extension due to the pay cut and part-time nature of the new contract, paving the way for Maguire to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Maguire, who had always expressed a desire to return to a full-time coaching role in the NRL, understandably opted for the full-time, three-year deal with the Broncos.

In the world of Rugby League, loyalty can only go so far when it comes to career opportunities and financial stability.

NSW officials may be feeling "filthy" about Maguire's departure, but they must acknowledge their own role in his decision.
