The NRL will test a new rule regarding kick-offs during the last few weeks of the regular season, starting with the Brisbane Broncos and Melbourne Storm on Thursday evening in Round 26.
This rule was discussed in the pre-season but didn't materialize.
Now, with last year's grand finalists playing in a match that won't affect the top eight, the NRL has chosen this game as the perfect opportunity for the trial.
In the past, the team that allowed a try was responsible for the next kick-off.
The new rule allows the team that concedes points to decide whether to kick-off or receive the ball after a try.
Kick-offs have recently attracted attention due to concussion issues, leading to discussions about possibly eliminating them entirely or introducing time restrictions.
While no such changes have been implemented, permitting the scoring team to kick-off represents one of the major shifts in the sport since the introduction of the six-again rule in 2020.
It was initially proposed to implement this rule during Round 27 between the St George Illawarra Dragons and Parramatta Eels.
Both teams have been out of finals contention for several weeks, making it seem like a likely scenario.
