In a significant development for the NRL finals, Peter V'landys indicated that a second team may be forced to leave their traditional home venue if they advance to the preliminary final. This follows widespread controversy regarding the relocation of Cronulla's home elimination final against the Cowboys from Shark Park to the larger Allianz Stadium.
Cronulla prop Addin Fonua-Blake criticized this move, stating it is "unfair" that the Sharks, who finished fifth, have to forfeit their home advantage. Historically, clubs were allowed to host the first week of finals at their suburban venues before transitioning to larger stadiums. However, the NRL overturned that policy due to concerns over limited fan attendance in smaller venues and financial implications for the league.
Shark Park, with a capacity of 15,000, lacks the necessary upgrades, while Allianz Stadium can accommodate up to 42,500 fans. Fonua-Blake expressed his disappointment, saying, "You work so hard during the year to get a home semi and for it to be taken away, it's unfair."
The Warriors also faced the possibility of relocation for their qualifying final against the Dolphins, initially set for Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium. Although they were ultimately permitted to play at their home ground, they are likely to move to the 50,000-seat Eden Park for a preliminary final if they win.
V'landys confirmed the discussions about the potential move, emphasizing the need to accommodate a larger audience. "I'd say you'd be 90 per cent sure that we'll be going to Eden Park," he noted.
Since returning to New Zealand post-COVID-19 pandemic, the Warriors have achieved a remarkable sell-out rate, drawing crowds consistently. Despite this success, veteran Roger Tuivasa-Sheck acknowledged the emotional connection to Mt Smart, saying, "Mt Smart is home, especially for the members." Still, he indicated that accommodating more fans at Eden Park would be a positive outcome.
