The NRL has announced a groundbreaking broadcast rights deal valued at $5.3 billion, set to span seven years, starting at the conclusion of the 2027 season.
Peter V'landys, chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission, hailed this deal as the "highest-ever" in the realm of Australian sports broadcasting.
He expressed, "This agreement is certainly futuristic."
V'landys added that it "future proofs the league for the next 20 to 50 years."
He anticipates a surge in broadcasting revenue as the sport looks to broaden its international reach.
He noted, "the ambition is to grow the game globally and with these additional funds we'll be able to achieve that."
One of the primary objectives of this new deal is to "future-proof" the league by focusing on digital streaming services.
Concerns loom over the possibility that increased payments from broadcasters could lead to a hike in subscription rates.
When asked directly about potential price increases, V'landys refrained from a clear response, instead reiterating the importance of keeping the sport affordable for Australian families.
