The NRL and its football department are in a bind after a series of costly errors by referee Ashley Klein in the Storm vs Roosters semi-final.

Klein's performance has put his involvement in future matches, including the preliminary final and grand final, in doubt.

The most glaring mistake came when Klein failed to call a knock-on by Harry Grant, allowing the Storm to score their second try.

Roosters captain James Tedesco confronted Klein, who later apologized.

Two other incidents also raised eyebrows, as Klein did not take appropriate action for a high tackle and a hit on Grant.

NRL's head of football, Graham Annesley, admitted that Klein was wrong in both instances.
