NRL Player Finds Peace in Bird Watching

Mitch Kenny's Unconventional Off-Field Passion

In the world of NRL, where aggression and competition are the norms, it's rare to find a player who relaxes by observing birds. However, for Mitch Kenny, this unique pursuit provides him with much-needed balance.

The 28-year-old hooker for the Penrith Panthers has gained a solid reputation since his debut in 2019, amassing 130 games. While he has established himself as a vital player in Penrith's strategy, it's his off-field hobby that's turning heads.

Kenny's passion for bird watching may seem at odds with the fast-paced, high-impact world of rugby league. Nevertheless, it plays a crucial role in helping him cope with the physical and mental pressures of the sport.

"There are a lot of mindfulness benefits [to birding]. It gets me off my phone - like a lot of young people, I'm probably a bit addicted. It gets me out of the house," he informed the Sydney Morning Herald.

"Just a great way for me to unwind, get away from my phone and also just the pressures of my job and the world, I suppose."

His journey into birding began in a straightforward way.

"I got into birding, I was just pretty much following my brother."

What started as a casual interest has blossomed into an integral aspect of his life, one that is influencing his teammates at the Panthers.

"They're good. We give each other a bit of stick about just anything. I've copped it a little bit, but I think deep down I'm starting to win them over. I think there are a few closeted birders now in the team, so I'm going to start to expose them," he remarked.
